Individual and Couples Therapy

I have a M.Sc. in Mental Health Counselling and have been working with individuals and families in that capacity since 2012. I work from a variety of different theoretical approaches including Psychodynamic, Somatic, Narrative, Compassion Focused, Solution Focused, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I also welcome creative means of communication including writing, art and music, and see much of the work I do as connected to development and trauma. Every individual seeking therapy will come with a unique set of needs and experiences, and it is my hope to work together towards understanding how to meet those needs, encourage growth and healing, and foster meaningful change and acceptance.

The human experience is infinite in complexity, diversity and meaning. I understand that the nature of concerns bringing someone into therapy can be equally complex and is rarely as simple as a behaviour, diagnosis, relationship problem or a life event. I have over a decade of experience helping people to work through a range of concerns including:

  • Relationship Concerns
  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Concerns around Self Image
  • Supporting a loved one through emotional distress or mental illness
  • Anxiety
  • Borderline Personality Disorder (CPTSD)
  • Bereavement / Suicide bereavement
  • Suicide Ideation

Diversity

It’s integral to my work as a therapist to create a safe and open space for individuals with diverse backgrounds including considerations such as culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and collective histories of colonialism, misogyny, and intergenerational trauma. I have attended the San’Yas indigenous cultural safety training, and many trainings on gender diversity and issues pertaining to the needs of new immigrants and refugees. That said, most of the learning I have done has been through the experience of meeting people, hearing their stories, listening to their needs, and treating them with respect and kindness. I’m open to hearing that I’ve made a mistake and take that information as an opportunity to learn and grow. Inclusivity will always be a work in progress for me, as I think it should be for anyone looking to create a safe therapeutic environment.

About Myself

Psychotherapy is relational and can feel very vulnerable. Most people have a natural desire to know a bit about who they are looking to open up to. “Who are you?” is probably the most reasonable question a person could ask someone with whom they intend to share meaningful personal information. So, who am I?

I’m a person, just like you. I have a garden that is always a work in progress, a stack of books I haven’t finished yet, and a M.Sc. in Mental Health Counselling. I’m a feminist. That can mean a lot of different things, but essentially I respect people of all genders and believe that systematic oppression is real, even if it isn’t always conscious. I love to explore the depth, complexity and diversity of nature and human experience. In my work I have the opportunity to see people move from profound suffering to meaningful change, and the perspective that grants me on hope is something I feel exceptionally privileged to have.
